"The brief," says Guenancia, "was to recreate, as far as possible, the original look and feel of the terrace. A very substantial lighting rig was specified, principally to ensure the vibe is maintained through the club’s 24-hour-opening cycle, including daytime when light streams through the terrace’s windows. A combination of LED architectural lighting, a massive array of par cans and high power moving heads achieves that objective. AVR slimline LED battens featuring individual high brightness LEDs were installed, allowing endless colour changing. These nestle in recessed areas around the bars, some uplighting bottles, others washing the walls with light."
The dancefloor lighting, likewise, was created in consultation with Romano and the club management and in the end, he says, "We reached a happy consensus." Some 100 par cans, eight Martin MAC2000 washes and eight MAC 550s light the area, with the LED fixtures providing background interest.
Says Guenancia: "Everyone had a chance to give their opinion, from Pepe, who was very hands-on, to Jamie, who came back after the opening and was knocked out by what he saw."
Asked why he thinks the contract was awarded to Halo, Yann Guenancia answered: "There are very few companies at the moment with the requisite experience and contacts to take on a hybrid brief such as this one and once the first hurdles were out of the way we were the obvious choice."
Is the Space Terrace project pointing the way to a new trend in design? "In the same way that the blueprint for night club design throughout the nineties was rooted in late eighties Acid House parties, the mold is now being set for the next decade. We are probably looking at a fusion of dance and architectural effects" says Yann.
